Designed to help care homes and families celebrate the excitement of the World Cup while creating meaningful opportunities for connection, reminiscence and participation, the bundle includes a brand-new World Cup Quiz, football singalongs and vintage World Cup footage that can be enjoyed by residents, families and care teams together.
Football has long been a powerful source of shared memories and cultural connection. For many older people, iconic World Cup moments, favourite teams and unforgettable football songs remain deeply embedded in personal histories. By bringing these experiences together in an accessible and engaging format, the Football Content Bundle aims to support wellbeing while creating enjoyable shared experiences during Care Home Open Week.
The resources have been developed in line with the principles outlined in our report, The Inclusive Screen: How to Make TV Dementia-Friendly, which highlights the importance of familiar, engaging and generationally relevant content for people living with dementia. The report emphasises that television can be far more than passive entertainment when used intentionally, helping people connect with others, revisit positive memories and participate in meaningful activity.
Research and lived experience gathered for the report found that familiar content, music, quizzes and reminiscence-based activities can help support emotional wellbeing, encourage participation and foster social connection. The report also highlights the importance of creating content that reflects the life experiences of today's older generations, moving beyond outdated assumptions about what people living with dementia enjoy and engaging instead with the music, culture and sporting moments that shaped their lives.
Football naturally lends itself to this approach. Whether reminiscing about historic World Cup tournaments, joining in with familiar football songs or testing knowledge through a quiz, residents can engage at different levels according to their interests and abilities. The varied nature of the activities also supports group participation, helping care teams create inclusive experiences that bring people together.
The Football Content Bundle is available free of charge throughout Care Home Open Week and can be used as part of themed events, reminiscence sessions, community open days or everyday wellbeing activities. It can also be used by families caring for loved ones with dementia at home.
